sand angel
‘sand angel’ is an installation created using images from September 2022 when I had just first moved to Chicago. The big change of moving across the country was tumultous and I found solice in sitting by the lake. In doing so I reflected a lot on my connection to water. As a kid I found so much joy in swimming, taking my shirt off and floating around. My dad and I are similiar in this way, we’re happiest when we get to swim. I lost this soon /prior to my transition, feeling gut-wrenched and disturbed anytime I had to strip down into a swimsuit. After transitioning, swimming and spending time around water has become joyous, envigorating, and healing once again.
on my mom’s side, I come from a family of sailors and navy veterans. There is a long linage of connections to the ocean. At the bottom of this sculpture is a book titled ‘The Ashley Book of Knots,’ Ashley, being my mom’s maiden name. This book was written by a great great uncle of mine, and depicts the deep tie my family has to the water.
