Angelov Chair began with a unique piece of reclaimed Douglas fir, an old floor joist featuring a large mortise. The split and reconstructed feature of the chair means to reference the history, strength and resilience of reclaimed material.
From there, the chair was approached as a research project, with 6 months of studying traditional chairmaking techniques. Elements of a Brettstuhl and Windsor chair are melded together. In researching, design and comfort were considered in tandem, with 4 different antique stick chairs referenced measurements.
The Angelov chair features a vertical split back highlighting the central mortise on the back. The lumber for the back was spit by hand and the natural fissure is reconnected using small, vertebrae-like tenons. The back was then mortised and wedged into the Windsor style seat. The seat features a hand carved texture and an ebonized finish.
